How New York City taxes your paycheck

  1. NYC tax applies to residents of the five boroughs, wherever they work. Commuters who live outside the city do not pay it.
  2. Your employer subtracts $5,000 (single) or $5,500 (married) plus $1,000 per exemption.
  3. The rest is withheld from 2.05% up to 4.25% on income above $60,000.
  4. City tax is withheld in addition to New York State tax, PFL and disability insurance.

New York state tax still applies

  1. Your employer subtracts a deduction allowance ($7,400 single, $7,950 married) and $1,000 per exemption claimed on Form IT-2104.
  2. The remainder is taxed on the 2026 exact-calculation schedule, starting at 3.9%. Some bands carry higher rates that phase out the lower brackets for high earners.
  3. Annualized net wages above $1,077,550 (single) or $2,155,350 (married) are withheld at a flat 10.45% to 11.7% of the whole amount.
  4. Paid Family Leave takes 0.432% of wages, capped at $411.91 for 2026. Disability insurance takes 0.5%, capped at $0.60 a week.
  5. New York City and Yonkers residents have a separate local withholding on top of state tax.
