Estimate based on 2026 IRS Publication 15-T and official state withholding tables. How we calculate
Choose your state
State and city taxes change your paycheck the most. Each state calculator has its own 2026 rates, examples and rules.
What comes out of your paycheck
- Federal income tax. Withheld with the IRS percentage method from Publication 15-T, based on your W-4 filing status, dependents and the two-jobs box. 2026 brackets run from 10% to 37%.
- Social Security. 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 in 2026.
- Medicare. 1.45% of all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000.
- State income tax. Nine states, including Texas and Florida, don't tax wages. The rest use flat rates (Illinois 4.95%, Pennsylvania 3.07%) or brackets (California up to 14.63% withholding).
- Local income tax. New York City, Philadelphia and most Ohio and Pennsylvania towns tax wages.
- State payroll taxes. California, New York and New Jersey deduct disability and family leave insurance.
- Pre-tax deductions. Traditional 401(k) contributions lower federal and most state income tax but not Social Security and Medicare.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my take-home pay?
Start with gross pay, then subtract federal income tax (from IRS Publication 15-T and your W-4), Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%), state and local income tax where they apply, state payroll taxes like SDI, and pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) and health insurance. What is left is your net pay.
How much federal tax is taken out of a paycheck in 2026?
It depends on pay and your W-4. A single filer earning $60,000 a year with no adjustments has about $5,020 a year withheld for federal income tax, or $193 per biweekly paycheck, plus $4,590 a year for Social Security and Medicare.
What is the Social Security wage base for 2026?
$184,500. Social Security tax of 6.2% stops once your wages for the year pass that amount. Medicare has no cap.
Is overtime tax-free in 2026?
Overtime is still withheld like regular pay. Under the 2025 tax law, you can deduct up to $12,500 of qualified overtime premium ($25,000 married filing jointly) on your federal return through 2028, which usually shows up as a bigger refund.
Why is my paycheck different from this calculator?
Employers may round, use wage bracket tables, apply benefits we don't know about, or reach the Social Security cap mid-year. The calculator is an estimate built on the official percentage method.
